Pada kuartal keempat tahun lalu, jam terbang kayuh yang terlampau tinggi menyulap sepeda lipat saya menjadi dua bagian terpisah. Kini—selain menumpang kendaraan istri—saya kembali rutin bepergian dengan berjalan kaki serta menumpang angkutan umum. Tentunya, kedua moda transportasi tersebut membutuhkan waktu tempuh lebih lama ketimbang mengendarai kendaraan pribadi. Walhasil, sayapun lebih kerap mengenakan earphone demi membunuh waktu, dan menjadi akrab dengan salah satu gestur interaksi digital yang oleh Nicolas Nova cum suis didefinisikan sebagai «Halfway Courtesy.»

Halfway Courtesy … refers to the removal of one of the two earbuds when a brief but unexpected encounter requires the user to be polite and attentive. It often happens in public transport when officials ask for tickets, or at a shop counter. … this behavior sends a strong message about how interested one is in what is being said and it is as if the speaker paid a compliment to the other party. However, this courtesy is only «halfway» as the speaker still have an earbud in the other ear.
