For one thing—and here you can use memory—you can look at the work you’ve done in the past and gauge its effectiveness, its power, and its grace. But you have to be tough-minded. You must be able to self-evaluate. You have to be very tough about your work in order to get anywhere. Like everything else, the issue surrounds narcissism and self-protection. You just have to be able to look and be able to assess what is not very good or not as good as you hoped. What I also find interesting is that as you progress in this field—as opposed to most other fields—there are some things you can’t do anymore. I can’t do the things I was able to do 30 years ago.
